Introduction: In 2004, Carlos Slim Helu (Slim) was voted by Forbes as the 17th richest man3 in the world and the richestman in LatinAmerica. He founded Grupo Carso (which is into retail outlets, hotels, beverage distributors, automative parts manufacturing and mining operations), Carso Global Telecom (which is into the telecom sector and Internet-related services) and Financiero Inbursa (which consists of companies in banking, leasing, insurance andmutual funds). Slimhas been a boardmember ofAltria Group Inc., the holding company of tobacco maker PhilipMorrisUSA, and of SouthwesternBellCommunications (SBCcommunications Inc.), the second-largest4 local-telephone company in the US.

Slim has the ability to acquire small businesses with unhealthy finances, and transform theminto profitable companies. His acquisitions began in 1965 and in no time he acquired number of companies.By 2004, Slimhad amassed a personalwealth of $14 billion.5 Still Slim has bigger dreams of becoming the undisputed telecom king of LatinAmerica.
